Daisy & The Puppy

Daisy & The Puppy‘ is a beautiful book by Lisa Shanahan written for children of 3 years of age and older. It is a heart-warming story of a little girl who wants a puppy, with a real portrait of family life and the implications of adding a puppy to the equation.

The family Lisa portrays is a loving, but realistic one, which I think is a great formula to present Imageto children. The father calls Daisy a ‘big duffer’ (which I absolutely love), the mother is kind, the children have ‘not so conventional’ names; Ruby, Lark, Jube and Daisy (which I think is important) and the parents are realistic about not being able to have a puppy with smaller children around. The reward for being patient and not complaining or throwing a tantrum is then that when the others are older, Daisy gets her puppy. But the adventure is hardly over as we get to see how a puppy can change the family/household dynamic.

I think this book is wonderful. Filled with beautiful Imageillustrations by Sara Acton, 2012 winner of the Crichton Award for New Illustrators, it is a great investment for your children, or a sure winner as a gift.

  1. Lisa Shanahan is an absolute star among the current generation of Australian picture book writers. There are heaps of let’s-get-a-pet books, but the scene with the basket is alone worth the price of the book – and there’s a lot more than that in it! Another writer who always surprises me is Nick Bland. Look out for him. I really enjoyed this review – thanks!
