Beth’s Bit – Dog on Log

dog-on-logThis is a book filled with adorable illustrations and an easy to understand storyline. Written by Tania Ingram, and aimed at children of a young age, ‘Dog on a Log’ is the story of Dog and his animal friends preparing for the visit of Dog’s friend, Cat, by throwing a party. This story represents the stereotypical roles of different animals through a humorous, yet at times, suspenseful way. Being a teacher I find great use in this story and would use it in a younger classroom. ‘Dog on Log’ uses small sentences with smaller words, making it easy to break down and understand.

Kat Chadwick has succeeded at fleshing out a simpler story by producing engaging, colourful illustrations that at times, tell a story in themselves. These pictures give the reader a deeper understanding of what is happening in the story and keep the reader’s attention through till the end. Through doing this Chadwick and Ingram have managed to find the perfect balance between storyline and illustration as the two complement each other quite nicely.

I recommend this book for parents with younger children along with teachers as it is not only an engaging book, but also a fantastic learning resource. With its colourful detail and suspenseful storyline it would make a great gift for younger children.

Hi, I’m Beth and I am a Primary School Teacher, as well as trying my hand at many other little tid bits of jobs here and there! I have loved reading since I was little and would frequently be found with a torch and a good book under my blanket after dark! Having the opportunity to now write reviews for some amazing books is a fantastic opportunity and I have loved it so far.
