The children’s literature world had heavy hearts on May 1st after news traveled of the passing of the much loved Australian author/illustrator Gregory Rogers. Scholastic’s statement read:
It is July that brings Rogers’ last book ‘Omar The Strongman‘ and it is indeed a beautifully written and illustrated work.
Omar is a very busy man who has signed up to do odd jobs at Circus La Fleur, and he falls in love with the circus and watching the stars practice while he is on his lunch break.
Rogers’ book brings to life the wonderful adventures of the circus and the triumph of a humble and helpful man.
Filled with beautiful and soft colours and pictures it is a work of art as well. This heart-warming and humorous story is a brilliant example of not only what Gregory Rogers has given to this country but the elite level at which Australian authors/illustrators are working. Rogers’ passion for children’s books is one to admire and it was responsible for the creation of many loved works that prove why he was the first Australian to receive the Kate Greenaway award (Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.)
If you only buy one book in July, I suggest it is this one. It will make a wonderful edition to any home and be a wonderful experience for children around the world.
