From the very first chapter in Brandon Mull’s Spirit Animals: Wild Born I was hooked. What’s not to love really? Four children on a dangerous quest to save Erdas, with the help of their spirit animals – in the case of Conor, Abeke, Meilin and Rollan their animals are Fallen Beasts returned to the realm to help Erdas in its time of need. With an obviously well-thought out storyline, and the promise of a sequel, Spirit Animals has the potential to be the next ‘big thing’.
I feel I should also mention the online aspect of Spirit Animals. Mull and Scholastic have gone far beyond just making a website with information about the book – they’ve created an entire game! There are plenty of novels based on games; but never before have I seen a game that mirrors a novel as successfully as spiritanimals.com. The incredible graphics and well thought out storyline had me enthralled for hours and I commend Brandon Mull and the creators of the online game for this clever addition to the franchise. This has also served to combine interests with tech savvy readers and gamers who may be interested to know the story behind the game. I would highly recommend buying this book for boys and girls from around the age of 11 and above.
